I was walking through the mall the other weekend and passed by one of those health supplement stores.
I always like to peek in to see what Quest bars they have available (they’re really tasty—especially the Quest Hero bars) but this time I was a bit surprised to see the featured product right in the entryway.
Protein Coffee.
I was mostly surprised because to my understanding it’s pretty much protein powder, mixed with espresso priced at $35 for 15 servings.
I was also surprised because I make this stuff every morning.
So I want to share my version with you!
Easy Keto Protein Coffee
The ingredients are simple, and it has plenty of benefits. It’s similar to bulletproof coffee, but I actually prefer the added protein.
It’s just coffee or espresso, coconut oil or butter, heavy whipping cream, protein powder (Isopure is a great zero carb option) and cacao powder.
My recipe always includes cacao powder for the chocolatey taste. Who doesn’t love chocolate??
The macros might surprise you for a coffee drink, but it truly is very filling and can easily be substituted for your breakfast any day. You should be totally fine if you plan for it ahead of time and track what you eat throughout the day.

Important note: this is CACAO powder (pronounced Ka-cow) , not COCOA powder. At the risk of sounding totally stuck up about this, I’ve come to greatly appreciate cacao.
The difference?
Cacao powder is made by cold-pressing cocoa beans, preserving the living enzymes and containing a higher antioxidant level than cocoa. (read much more about the differences here)
So here’s how I make it!

Is it okay to not use the protein powder?
Sam says
Sure! It’ll still be yummy 🙂
Rabbi Paul says
No, it’s not okay to use protein powder. It is a chemical concoction that is very unhealthy for you. It contains sucralose that is an absolute Keto no no. You should never use sugar substitutes. They cause insulin release and promote diabetes. Xanthan gum is derived from sugar. The sugar can come from many different places, including wheat, corn, soy and dairy. People in the corn industry would love it if you eat it but most nutritionist are not so convinced this chemically produced fiber is so good to eat. It can be found in most adhesives as well as salad dressings. mmm Then we have the whey itself which has so many potential good and bad side effects. Follow grandpa’s advice and stay as low to the ground as possible when you eat. Natural pure unadulterated foods are the real healthy answer 10 out of 10 times!

Can I use MCT oil instead of coconut oil or butter?
Sam says
absolutely!
Carol Johnson says
May I use cream de cacao instead of powder?
Sam says
I could see that working out, but it would be a different kind of drink at that point. Also, I’m not sure about the carb count on cream de cacao.
Sharon says
I use powerdered Collagen as protein. It has 11 grams per scoop
Erica James says

I decided last night that I was going to give Keto a shot this week, but because I’m an endomorph wanted to add in a little more protein. Did a quick Google search this morning and found this recipe! It was delicious! I actually had chocolate flavored protein powder so I didn’t add in the cacao but it was still delicious! I’ve found my new breakfast – thank you!

Putting protein powder in hot water or milk or anything hot really is poison. Protein powder should be consumed cold and immediately.
